On Wednesday the NBA announced its partnership with game developer Take Two Interactive to kickstart an NBA 2K competitive gaming league. The so called “NBA 2K E-League” marks the first United States sports based competitive gaming tournament. The E-League is planned to kickstart sometime in 2018.
Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, plans to give all 30 teams in the NBA their own team of NBA 2K gamers, all with their own paid salaries. Prior to each season, drafts will be held so each team can select from the world’s top NBA 2K players. Teams composed of the draft selections will represent each NBA team. Much like how each team has their own D-League affiliate, there will now be an E-Sports team. Each game will be held much like a real NBA game, by selling tickets for stadium seats and using large screen displays.
