First Women’s Collegiate Esports Team

This week history was made in the realm of competitive gaming. The first ever all female varsity level esports team was established at a college in Missouri.

Stephens College, located in Columbia, Missouri, is establishing an official esports team dedicated to playing competitive Overwatch. The university had already been part of National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). The NACE is essentially the esports equivalent to the NCAA.

Their team will consist of 12 players, six in the staring lineup and six more players on the bench. When asked, the Stephens College esports team said that they chose Overwatch due to the strong representations of female heroes within the game.

Overwatch has been known for its inclusiveness of all genders, sexualities, and races. Some of the female heroes include Mercy, a beloved and extremely vital healer, Zarya, a strong and brave tank hero, and Symmetra, an extremely intelligent support hero.

Stephens College is currently holding tryouts for the team, which any student can participate in. Once tryouts are concluded, Stephens College plans to begin their first esports games at the Overwatch Leagues run by Tespa.
