League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) developed by Riot Games. The game was first released in 2009 and the game is widely considered to be the brainchild of the other e-sports giant, Defense of the Ancients.
The gameplay is centered around a 3-D arena in which players choose or are assigned champions. Each champion has its unique set of abilities, each encouraging different kinds of play styles. There are three game modes, but in most matches the primary objective is to destroy the the building in the middle of the map, called the Nexus.
The game has a total player base of over 100 million globally. Monthly active users on LoL as of 2015 was 32 million. Daily active players on League are at 12 million. In 2016 alone, the game rewarded over $10 million to competitive players. These numbers make League of Legends the most watched e-sports game in the world.
